Grab a Ouija board, play Sound Living (Drunk with Joy) and commune with the only god that the world of dark rock ever mourned. I betcha a bucket o' pirate gold that Ian Curtis would lay an unequivocal kiss of approval upon the rapidly up-and-coming UK duo known as Drunk with Joy. Audio-mates, Mila Oshin & Kris Jager, list a buncha influences *here*. Myspace.com audio profiles: myspace.com/drunkwithjoy

The diversity of those influences hint beautifully at how well Drunk with Joy compose seductive ballads that tug upon the more melancholic chords of the human heart.

[SIDE-BAR] I have had this disc in permanent rotation in our bedroom ever since it arrived (which explains the delay with writing any reviews). Give it a spin. If it doesn't put you in the mood, then take/send it back. (You're already dead.)

"WOMAN"... (one of several sensual, provocative, and just damned groovy tracks appearing on Sound Living) deals with the most heinous and inextricable forms of imprisonment; self-imprisonment. However, the theme therein deals with the plight of women against women, in general, rather than applying any focus to an arbitrary individual/example. The pointed lyrics direct attention to a woman's inclination to attack one's own gender in deference to societal constructs, and any sense of male dominance against women, in general. From this song emanates an ironically quixotic mantra that sticks to the soul throughout each passing day:

proudly you say:
"these clothes and this body are mine"
you put your make-up on but you can't
make up your mind
about what face to wear
when will you be free?

Existing cinematic applications...

Well-written novels and screenplay experiences tend to beg for applicable audio. Two films surfaced in the year 1988 which I believe when played in conjunction with audio from Sound Living become more vivid and vital to any viewing audience.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), based upon a novel authored by Milan Kundera which bears the same title, makes an excellent companion to "travelling light", the initial loading track espoused by Sound Living. The inherent complexities of this story by Kundera match well with the musical arrangements and themes presented by Drunk with Joy.

More controversial even than Kundera's reflections upon living and loving, are the socially taboo elements of despair portrayed by Mariel Hemingway in a beloved film entitled The Suicide Club (1988). Dim the lights and allow the audio/visual media to cast sullen vibes against strobelit shadows, sinking ever more deeply into the audio corners of Sound Living unleashed by Drunk with Joy [A MAZE RECORDS]. The Suicide Club moves languidly through anti-social boredom. Had Drunk with Joy existed in the late eighties, then... who knows? Had this dynamic duo been available then for film audio title track provisioning, they might have accepted. And then again... they might have just as quickly declined. The subject matter of this film leans toward the morose, and yet with an awkward appeal to that Breakfast Club sort of crowd.

When at home, turn the view-screen audio down, and turn the stereo audio up. Insert cinema, and then press play on Sound Living...

Sound Living = Eleven original tracks, followed by a lovingly sombre bonus 12th track, "not to forget" (composed in dedication "to the memory of r k l") provide a long awaited full-length follow-up to the band's debut mini-album entitled, I Say Goodbye, which remains (in my humble opinion) one of the most impressive debut albums that I have ever audition, thoroughly enjoyed, and kept in perpetual motion long beyond the posted expiration date.

Bravo, Dahlink! I commented over at MySpace already... but just wanted to pop in here and say "job well done".

Hey, I have a mish-mash of DVD reviews for 2005 that I would like you to work your majik on - perhaps this weekend we can turn it into something cohesive and entertaining for IMWT or one of your super cool blogs. I have had this image of Andy Bell in blue glitter buttless chaps stuck in my head all day, and it must be excised soon.
